Online prices can depend on your location, device, and browsing history. Stores adjust them with dynamic pricing and personalization, so two shoppers in different cities may see different prices for the same product.

You can check this yourself with a clean browser profile and proxies from different cities: open the product, record the price, switch location, and compare. Below, we explain how to do it step by step and how to tell a real Black Friday discount from a fake one.

## Why the Same Product Can Have Different Prices Online

Online stores set prices with two mechanisms. Dynamic pricing reacts to the market: demand, stock levels, restocking speed, and competitor prices. Personalization reacts to you: your IP address, location, device, and behavior on the site. Together, they can produce different prices for the same product.

## What Affects the Prices You See?

Modern e-commerce pricing algorithms combine hundreds of data points, though not every system collects the same information. Here are some of the factors that can affect the prices you see on marketplaces right now.

| **Factor** | **Data Used** | **How It Can Affect Prices and Offers** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Location | IP address, autonomous system number (ASN), ZIP code, mobile network or internet service provider (ISP) data | Your location can help the system assess local competition, shipping costs, and income levels. |
| Device and browser | User-Agent, Canvas and WebGL fingerprints, operating system: macOS, iOS, Windows, or Android | Your device can serve as an indirect signal of your budget. For example, the system may assume that someone with an expensive device is willing to spend more. |
| On-site behavior | Repeat product views, abandoned carts, scroll depth, checkout speed | These actions help gauge your interest in a product and readiness to buy. If you keep returning to an item without placing an order, the site may offer a discount. |
| Connection reputation | IP Fraud Score, signs of a VPN, Tor, or datacenter IP, inconsistencies in request headers | If your connection looks suspicious, the site may run extra checks or restrict access to promotions, leaving you with the standard price. |
| Customer data | CRM identifier, purchase and spending history, loyalty program membership | Purchase history helps estimate how much a customer may spend in the future (LTV) and tailor prices, discounts, or personalized offers. |

## Why Location Makes Such a Difference

Stores use your public IP address to estimate where you are and factor that into the price. **Local income levels** are only part of the picture. It also matters **whether nearby competitors sell the same product**.

Stores charge less where competitors are nearby. A Wall Street Journal [investigation](https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887323777204578189391813881534) showed this on Staples: shoppers within about 20 miles of an OfficeMax or Office Depot store saw lower online prices. In rural areas with fewer alternatives, the same items cost 10-15% more.

Apps can pinpoint your location even more precisely than an IP address. Geofencing detects when you enter a defined area, such as a store. And that affects prices, too.

Apps can track location more precisely than an IP address. Target’s app [used](https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-lawsuits-california-target-corp-35db1e4f1ea1d43ef7a1f7f2b4630c41) GPS and in-store Wi-Fi to detect when a shopper entered the store and then switched the lower online price to the higher shelf price.

So the price you see from one location is not necessarily the lowest price available.

## How to Check Whether You’re Seeing the Lowest Price

![How to Check Whether You’re Seeing the Lowest Price](https://blog.froxy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/01-Nov-02-2026-08-31-36-6407-AM.png?width=1548&height=408&name=01-Nov-02-2026-08-31-36-6407-AM.png)

To compare prices across regions and shopper profiles, open the same product under different conditions. You’ll need proxies, another device, or an antidetect browser.

A separate incognito window won’t do the job. Your IP address and hardware fingerprint stay the same, so the store will recognize you as the visitor who was there a few minutes ago.

The basic workflow is simple: create an isolated browser profile, connect your proxy, and open the site. Then change your proxy settings and browser fingerprint, revisit the same site, and compare prices.

### Step 1. Create Separate Browser Profiles

Use an [antidetect browser](https://blog.froxy.com/en/antidetect-browsers-overview?hsLang=en) such as Incogniton, Dolphin{anty}, Multilogin, or AdsPower. These browsers let you create separate profiles with their own cookies, cache, and local site data, keeping one session’s history from affecting another.

Most of them also let you configure the User-Agent and fingerprint settings, including Canvas and WebGL. Keep these settings consistent: changing the User-Agent alone won’t convincingly make Chrome look like Safari or Windows look like macOS.

We recommend changing one variable at a time. To test location, keep the device settings the same and change only the region. To compare devices, stick to one region. Otherwise, you won’t know what caused the difference.

### Step 2. Connect Proxies from Your Target Regions

A proxy changes the IP address the site sees, letting you check offers from different locations.

For these checks, we recommend [residential proxies](https://froxy.com/en/residential-proxies): real IP addresses from ISP networks. To see what mobile shoppers see, use [mobile proxies](https://froxy.com/en/mobile-proxies).

Stores easily recognize datacenter IPs and often respond with CAPTCHAs or restrictions, which get in the way of a clean comparison.

In the Froxy dashboard, for example, you can choose the region and city you want to check from.

![Froxy dashboard](https://blog.froxy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image1.png?width=838&height=865&name=image1.png)

When comparing US prices, include a few types of locations:

- Major cities with a high cost of living, such as New York and Los Angeles.
- Cities in different states, so you can compare totals including taxes and shipping.
- Suburbs, where the mix of nearby stores differs from downtown.
- Remote areas with fewer retail chains nearby.

Check which region the store has detected: it may differ from the location assigned to your proxy. Also check the selected store, shipping ZIP code, and address in your account. Many stores prioritize these over your IP.

### Step 3. Keep Your Session Consistent and Check the Cart Total

Keep one IP throughout each session. We usually set 15–30 minutes per location: enough to open the product, add it to the cart, and reach checkout.

Switching IPs midway often triggers extra verification or changes the offer. Froxy lets you set IP rotation intervals from 90 seconds to one hour within your chosen location.

Compare the same product from the same seller, with matching model, configuration, quantity, and shipping terms. Run your checks at roughly the same time so you don’t mistake a regular price change for a regional difference.

Record both the product page price and the checkout breakdown:

- Product price before discounts.
- Automatic discounts and their conditions.
- Sales tax.
- Shipping costs and extra fees.

A lower catalog price doesn’t always mean a cheaper purchase. Compare the final totals and note what accounts for each difference.

## Black Friday 2026: How to Tell a Real Discount from a Fake One

**Our advice: start tracking prices at least a month before Black Friday**. Save links to the products you want and record their prices several times. If you can access a few months of price history, check that too: prices may already have risen before you started tracking. This gives you a regular price to compare the sale against, rather than just a crossed-out number.

Most Black Friday discounts are not unique. UK consumer group Which? [checked](https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/black-friday-deals-exposed-as-duds-aoK6u3j2suyu) 227 offers from the 2023 sale and found that **92% were available at the same price or lower within six months before or after the event**.

Actual savings are also smaller than advertised. In one [audit](https://redstagfulfillment.com/average-discount-offered-on-black-friday/), discounts advertised at 40–50% saved shoppers only 5.5-15% compared with the product’s average annual price.

Retailers use two common tactics. Some raise prices gradually before the sale and then lower them back to the usual level. Others calculate the discount from the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, even if the store never charged it. In both cases, the discount looks large, but the final price is close to the regular one.

## Mistakes That Throw Off Price Comparisons

![Using the Wrong Proxies](https://blog.froxy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/02-Nov-02-2026-08-33-04-4761-AM.png?width=1548&height=408&name=02-Nov-02-2026-08-33-04-4761-AM.png)

If your browser, proxy, and account settings conflict, the store may show a different region, display a CAPTCHA, or restrict access. You’ll end up comparing prices under different conditions, which won’t tell you much about whether a Black Friday offer is actually a good deal.

### Using the Wrong Proxies

Proxy type affects connection stability and available locations, but it doesn’t guarantee a low Fraud Score or freedom from blocks.

| **Proxy Type** | **Key Features** | **What to Consider When Comparing Prices** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Datacenter proxies](https://blog.froxy.com/en/datacenter-proxies?hsLang=en) | IP addresses from data centers | The store may recognize the data center network and run additional checks. |
| [Residential proxies](https://blog.froxy.com/en/real-vs-fake-residential-proxies?hsLang=en) | IP addresses from home ISP networks | Useful for comparing regions. Keep the IP fixed during each check; city or ZIP-code targeting depends on the provider. |
| [Mobile proxies](https://blog.froxy.com/en/how-mobile-proxies-work-and-how-to-use-them?hsLang=en) | Mobile carrier IPs, often shared by many subscribers | Geolocation may be imprecise, and the IP may change. Keep that in mind when repeating checks. |

Fraud Scores vary between systems, and residential or mobile IPs can still face restrictions. Check how your proxy provider sources its addresses.

### Your Account and Saved Region

Even with a proxy, signing into your personal account can affect the results. The store gains access to your purchase history, loyalty membership, and saved shipping address. To test the effect of location, compare offers in separate profiles without signing in. Check personalized offers separately.

After switching proxies, check the selected city, store, and shipping address. These may persist in cookies or browser local storage, since a new IP won’t necessarily update them automatically.

### WebRTC Leaks

WebRTC supports calls and other direct connections between browsers. It can expose your real IP even when the proxy is on.

A standard HTTP/HTTPS proxy doesn’t guarantee that WebRTC traffic will pass through it. Before checking prices, we always run a quick leak test with a tool such as BrowserLeaks. If the test shows your original public IP while the proxy is connected, disable WebRTC or enable leak protection in your browser settings, then test again.

Mismatched addresses can give the antifraud system another signal to act on. Best case, nothing happens. Worst case, you get a CAPTCHA or lose access to discounts.

## Monitoring Regional Prices at Scale

![Monitoring Regional Prices](https://blog.froxy.com/hs-fs/hubfs/03-3.png?width=1548&height=408&name=03-3.png)

Manual monitoring becomes impractical when marketplace algorithms change prices millions of times a day and retailers adjust their offers in response to competition in specific cities and states.

If your technical team is building a scraper from scratch, we have several guides that cover the details:

- [Web scraping best practices](https://blog.froxy.com/en/web-scraping-best-practices?hsLang=en): the basics of configuring client headers (User-Agent, Accept-Language), spacing out requests, avoiding bans, and rotating proxies correctly.
- [Scraping dynamic content](https://blog.froxy.com/en/web-scraping-dynamic-content?hsLang=en): how to extract data from JavaScript-heavy pages efficiently with headless browsers and session-based proxies, without sacrificing performance.
- [AI web scraping guide](https://blog.froxy.com/en/ai-web-scraping?hsLang=en): tools and AI techniques for automating competitive price analysis.
- Dedicated guides to [Amazon scraping](https://blog.froxy.com/en/amazon-web-scraping?hsLang=en) and [collecting data from eBay](https://blog.froxy.com/en/ebay-scraping-with-froxy-scraper?hsLang=en).

### A Ready-to-Use Option: Quick Price Checks with Froxy E-commerce Scraper

For a quick check of competitors’ listings ahead of Black Friday, try [Froxy E-commerce Scraper](https://froxy.com/en/e-commerce-scraper).

This no-code scraper collects data from major marketplaces, including Amazon, eBay, and AliExpress. To start monitoring, enter your target categories or a list of URLs. The scraper automatically recognizes the page structure and extracts the fields you need.

Froxy E-commerce Scraper uses a global pool of more than 120 million residential IP addresses across 200+ countries. Choose a specific region, state, or city to see local prices and promotions as shoppers in that location see them.

You pay only for successful requests and correctly retrieved data. A free trial is available.

## Conclusion

Online prices aren’t fixed: your IP, device, and account all shape the number you see. A crossed-out price on Black Friday tells you even less, since it is often calculated from a price nobody ever paid.

To see the real picture, start a month early. Use separate browser profiles, keep one IP per session, and compare final checkout totals rather than catalog prices. Checking manually works for a handful of products. For whole categories and dozens of cities, automation saves days of work.

Either way, it all starts with the right IPs. Froxy gives you 120M+ residential addresses in 200+ countries, with targeting down to the city. Try it for $1.99 and see what shoppers in New York, Dallas, or a small town in Ohio really pay!
